Second-Hand Embarrassment: My Souvenir From Thailand

Hi everyone, welcome back!

I know the title sounds funny, but stick with me—you’ll soon see why this Thailand travel experience left me feeling like I was trapped in a grown-up version of a school field trip, complete with chaos, confusion, and more second-hand embarrassment than I thought I could handle.

When a Dream Thailand Vacation Turns Into a School Field Trip

So here’s how it started: my father-in-law gifted my husband and me an all-expenses-paid trip to Thailand as a reward for hitting our targets. Flights, hotels, food, sightseeing—everything was taken care of. For once, we didn’t have to plan a thing. It was supposed to be easy. Smooth. Stress-free.

And it was, until we realized we were part of a group tour.

From the very first day, I felt like I’d been transported back to my school days. Not in the nostalgic, happy way. No, this was the “dear-god-get-me-out-of-here” kind of déjà vu.

I couldn’t help but mentally categorize people into groups:

  • The loud backbenchers (who thought the trip was their personal comedy show).
  • The “mature” group (polite, observant, pretending not to be bothered).
  • The ones who never listen (always confused, always delaying).
  • And then there was us the awkward, embarrassed, praying not to be associated with any of it.

What followed became one of the most memorable and frustrating—parts of our Thailand vacation.

The Queue Problem: Why Basic Travel Etiquette Matters

Everywhere we went the airports, buses, hotel lobbies—there was one simple instruction: make a single line.

Just stand behind the person in front of you.

Easy, right?

Apparently not.

Because every single time, it turned into a crowd. Two lines, three lines, people cutting in from the sides. I stood there cringing, wondering if these were the same people who complain when kids don’t know how to queue.

The second-hand embarrassment was real.

It’s funny how travel etiquette seems so simple until you’re surrounded by people determined to ignore it.

The Chaotic Speed Boat Boarding Experience

This one scarred me.

Picture this, a speed boat with exactly 20 seats. We were supposed to board calmly, one by one.

Instead, the moment boarding opened, people rushed forward like it was the last boat of their lives.

They pushed, shoved, squeezed past one another, and jumped aboard with an urgency that made absolutely no sense. For a moment, I genuinely thought someone might get hurt.

No concern for who was in front of them.
No awareness of who might be struggling.
No patience.

Just pure chaos.

I stood back watching in horror, thinking this is not in a survival movie. It’s just a boat ride.

When Adults Forget the Basics

And that became the theme of the trip.

Instructions were ignored.
Delays became routine.
Common courtesy disappeared.

People left messes behind, cracked jokes that made you want to disappear into the floor, and encouraged the guide’s flirty commentary like teenagers on a school bus.

Except these weren’t teenagers.

These were grown adults in their 40s and 50s.

And here’s the part that genuinely bothered me.

I used to think children were usually the embarrassing ones—the tantrums, the noise, the refusal to listen. But this group travel experience was a reality check.

Children learn by watching.

If adults ignore basic manners, patience, and respect, how can we expect kids to behave differently?

That realization stayed with me long after the trip ended.

Finding My People in the Crowd

By the end of the trip, we found a small circle of people around our age who seemed to feel exactly the same way.

The shared glances.
The awkward smiles.
The silent “Did that really just happen?” moments.

It was comforting to know we weren’t alone.

But it didn’t completely erase the guilt.

The guilt of staying silent.
The guilt of choosing peace over confrontation.
The guilt of simply wanting to enjoy our vacation without becoming the group’s unofficial disciplinarian.

Maybe that was selfish.

But at the time, it felt like survival.

Exploring Thailand Away From the Group

Don’t get me wrong, the trip had plenty of highlights.

Thailand is stunning.

We watched sunsets that looked like they belonged on postcards. We drank more coconut water than I thought humanly possible and spent hours wandering through streets filled with food, music, and life.

Some of our favorite memories happened on the days we broke away from the group and explored on our own expense.

Those moments felt like freedom.

Like the Thailand vacation we’d actually imagined when we first heard about the trip.

And perhaps that’s why those memories stand out so vividly was because they gave us a glimpse of what the entire experience could have been.

What This Group Travel Experience Taught Me

Every beautiful memory came tangled with an undercurrent of frustration and second-hand embarrassment.

Because honestly, it didn’t feel like an international vacation.

It felt like a school field trip where half the class refuses to behave, the teacher eventually gives up, and you’re left wondering how you ended up on the wrong bus.

And that’s when it hit me:

Respect, manners, and responsibility don’t magically appear when you travel abroad.

They’re not about where you are.

They’re about who you are.

Travel simply reveals the habits and attitudes people already carry with them.

Would I Ever Join Another Group Tour?

So yes, Thailand was beautiful.

We had fun.
We met a few wonderful people.
We made memories I’ll always treasure.

But alongside the beauty, what will stay with me is the chaos, the cringe, and the uncomfortable realization that growing older doesn’t always mean growing up.

And if you’re wondering whether I’ll ever sign up for another group tour, the answer is simple:

No.

Not unless I know I’m traveling with people who are respectful, considerate, and self-aware.

That’s the kind of travel group I’d happily join.

But after the sheer exhaustion of this experience?

Let’s just say it’ll take a while before I even consider it.
